On Wednesday 14th December we were invited to visit Santa at Braehead.
Before meeting Santa we saw a 4D film called Boris in the Winter Forest. There were Bubbles blowing on our faces! When Santa came he gave everyone a present and told us we were all on his good list!

Scotland

We love our topic! Everyone has explored and learned so much about Scotland we have had so much fun!

After looking at the maps we then looked at using directions. We were directing each other around the classroom using positional language such as forwards, backwards, left and right. Mrs Coyle turned us all into cars and we have to use our indicators to show which way we were turning! This was tricky for us! We tried out some of our directions by using the beebot, everybody wanted a shot of this. We worked with our shoulder partner to create our own treasure map for Bobby. We then played a game by directing Bobby around our maps using the mathematical vocabulary we had already learned. This was great fun and no Bobbys got lost!

During our gym lessons we have been learning some Scottish dances including the Canadian Barn Dance, we can do this progressively and we have learned the Gay Gordons. Room 9 have been joining us for our dance practises and they are also very good. Mrs Coyle, Mrs Brodie and Mrs Ronnie are all very impressed by how well we can remember our steps and stay in time with the music. We all love working with our partner and our aim is to practise the tricky arm positions in the Gay Gordons for the joint ceilidh we are going to have with Room 9 and 10 after the October holiday.

Most recently we have been looking at Scottish culture including our food and tartan. We investigated the origins of tartan and researched the different clans and what their tartan looks like. We then looked at making our own tartan using weaving. This was a tricky skill for us to learn. Mrs Coyle was so proud of us for helping each other as we discovered 4 hands were better than 2! We are going to make our belts and buckles and then our kilts will be complete. Food is an important part of Scottish culture and we talked about all the different types of food that are made in Scotland and that we eat in Scotland. Then we made a Scottish food collage on our plates. This made everyone a little hungry!

Health

In health we have been taking part in lots of different activities! We have been talking about friendships and how we can be good friends to everyone at circle time. We have also been looking at washing our hands and how germs can spread very easily. Mrs Coyle read us a story on our smartboard about Suki Sneeze and how she caught some germs from N . We learned how to wash our hands properly and how to use a tissue when we sneeze or cough. Everyone loved playing the splat the germ game. We have also been practising our massage. We all know to ask permission, check our strength and by gentle. Everyone is very relaxed when we do this

Science (October 2011)

We have been learning about forces in Science. These have included pushing and pulling, floating and sinking and we are still to look at magnetism. This will be exciting!

We conducted lots of experiments to see which items could float and which items sank. We recorded our results so we could compare our results and discuss our findings with the whole class.

Everyone really enjoyed the experiments and Mrs Brodie is sure their are some scientists of the future in our class!

Eid Il Fitr (Ocotber 2011)

In RME we have have continued to learn how Muslims celebrate this exciting Festival. We finished our prayer mats and added fringing to make them look authentic. We also made Eid cards, created mehndi patterns and recorded our mind maps.

Mrs Brodie has been very impressed with our quality questions and good listening during this topic. Well done Primary 3a!

Welcome to Primary 3a!

Welcome to Primary 3a! We have all had a fantastic start to Primary 3 with everyone trying their best in everything they do.

This year the whole school is working towards achieving our Rights Respecting School status. We have already looked at the rights we have and what our responsibilities are to have these rights. We made a class charter which everyone has signed. We will be doing lots of different activities over the year relating to our rights and responsibilities.

In maths the triangles and the rectangles have been learning the 2 and 5 times tables and the circles have been practising adding and taking away within 20. Everyone loves taking part in active maths!

We have also been looking at collecting information

and using it to make a bar graph! We worked in our cooperative learning groups to complete this challenge.

Grefriars Bobby delivered a special book to our class to introduce us to our topic, Scotland. Bobby has been setting us different challenges to help us to explore and learn about different parts of Scotland.

We have used maps to look at where Scotland is in the world and where Renfrew, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Skye are in Scotland.

We used a super website to help us learn all about the features of the Highlands. http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/education/sysm/landscapes/ Everyone loved drawing their own picture of the Highlands and were able to label the key features. We are looking forward to learning about the River Clyde and about different tartans. Everyone has had great fun learning the Canadian Barn dance at gym and we can't wait to learn some more Scottish Country dances.

In R.M.E we are learning about islam and Eid ul Fitr. We made a learning plan and have mapped out what we would like to learn about this topic. We looked at the prayer mats Islams use and we started to create our own.

P3a Assembly

Our assembly took place on Friday 17th June. We told the whole school about UNICEF and the Rights Respecting School Award.

We tried to show the difference between a need and a want.

There are 42 rights in the convention. Here are some of the ones we showed
- the right to healthy food
- the right to clean water
- the right to clothes
- the right to have space to play

Pupils have the right to share their opinion.

Pupils have the right to join groups.

Pupils have the right to learn.

We sang 'Whether you're one or two or three.'

Our school would like to get a Rights Respecting School Award next session. There are still some things we need to do
- make a class charter
- find ways to help the local community
- make friends with children in some of the poorer countries in the world
- know our rights and tell others about them.

Sports' Day

We have started practising for our sports' day which will be held in June. We need to improve our skipping, football and hockey dribbling skills to earn lots of points for our ships.

The Twits

This term we are studying the novel The Twits by Roald Dahl to help us with our language, science and technology.

We made collages of the Twits' hairy faces using pictures from magazines and coloured wool. We added paper we had curled ourselves to make them look even hairier! Here we are as Mr and Mrs Twit! Don't we look fabulous?

Mrs Twit made her husband a horrible meal of wormy spaghetti! We created ghastly menus of our own. Would you like to try this one?

We made moving models of Mrs Twit's glass eye. She takes it out to frighten people, especially Mr Twit!

Open Evening

We have been working very hard over the last few weeks preparing for our Ancient Egyptians open evening. We invited our parents and carers to our classroom on Tuesday night to see all our work that we have been doing in class.

Here we are with our fancy headbands that we made for our evening. The girls had a cleopatra style wig band and the boys designed a cobra on the front of theirs.

Here is our Shabtis which we modelled from clay. Ancient Egyptians buried these with Pharaohs as they believed they would become their servants in the afterlife.

These Canopic jars would hold vital organs when a body was mummified. Ours look very fancy. What do you think?

Here are our Scarab Beetles. We used tissue paper and tin foil for the bodies. They looked very colourful.

We spent a long time creating an Egyptian scene inside a shoebox. We did this as part of a homework task that lasted 3 weeks. Our teachers were very proud of our work and took lots of pictures of them.

Learning about the Egyptians has been hard work but we also had great fun. We are excited to start a new topic after the Easter holidays.

Early exercise!

We have been exercising on a Thursday morning as part of Active month. It has been great fun taking part aswell as watching the teachers join in!

On Wednesday we were invited by Primary 3b for an Egyptian fruit tasting session. Here we are with some of the fruits that the Ancient Egyptians ate.

As part of our P.E this term we have been participating in creative dance with Mrs Brodie. Here we are in a winter fun session.

World of Work Week

During World of Work Week we heard all about being a doctor or a nurse in a hospital. We learned that nurses have to work 12 hour shifts which is like coming to school at 9 o'clock in the morning and not getting to go home until 9 o'clock at night!

Our doctor visitor brought some of her instruments with her.

She let some people try out her stethoscope. Doctors use these to listen to people's lungs to check if they are working properly.

She also showed us how to use her tendon hammer to check if the messages are getting from the brain to the body. Luckily they were!

Museum Visit

This term we are doing our big integrated topic. Our topic is the Ancient Egyptians. To help us get started we visited Paisley Museum.

Healthy Eating

We have been learning all about healthy eating from Miss Paterson. We have learned about the food groups - startchy foods, fruit and vegetables, protein and dairy products. We are going to be keeping a diary of our snacks to make sure we are eating healthily.

Oor Dentist

During January we all learned the Scottish poem Oor Dentist by Lydia Robb for the Burns' competition. We were all great but Megan Boyd, Elli Gentles and Megan Grant were superb so they were all presented with a certificate at the Burns' Assembly. Megan Boyd recited it at the assembly in front of all the children, staff and lots of parents. She was a real star!

Christmas Concert

Primary 3a took part in the Christmas concert by singng Merry Christmas Everyone. We danced and did lots of actions as we were singing. Lots of people came to see the concert and everyone said we were brilliant!

We have received some exciting letters from Santa Claus recently! He has asked us to set up a company to deliver the Christmas cards the children like to send to each other. After lots of discussion we decided to call our company JINGLE BELL MAIL. Our logo is a circle with a Santa hat and stars in the centre. It also has our initials JBM on it.

We have all settled well into our temporary school building although some people are taking a little time to get used to the new routines. We have two new teachers to help us learn, Miss Burns and Miss Paterson.

We all designed and made bags in technology. We had to copy our designs onto our bags and then thread the ribbon through to join the sides. After that we attached handles.

P3a have been working very hard this term!

We have all settled in to our new class and for some a new school, very well.

During our first week we worked in groups to come up with group names. We decided on 'Toy Story' and were given Slinky the Dog, Buzz, Jessie and Woody for each group to choose from. We worked on a group challenge and created posters to represent our table.

We have also been doing lots of active maths tasks, working with partners, independently and in groups.

The circles are working on adding with carrying.

The squares are working hard at the 2, 3, 5 and 10 timestables.

On Friday Primary 3 went out in the school grounds with a ranger from Starling Learning to look for signs of spring. They managed to find rabbit holes, buds on trees, daffodils and many other signs. They also heard the birdsong from the birds building nests in the trees.

After several weeks of very hard work at school and at home, Primary 3 had their Open Evening for their Viking Topic on 24th of March. Everyone who attended was impressed by the children's work and had an enjoyable evening completing the activities. They even managed to write messages in Viking runes!

We have been very busy as Santa wrote to us at the beginning of December asking us to organise the Christmas post for the school. We set up our own company called Christmas Mail. Then we designed posters to let the other classes in school know what we were doing. Next we made a list of all the jobs that had to be done such as Collectors, Sorters, Stampers and Deliverers. We have a rota so that everyone has a chance to do each job.

The children of Primary 3 had a great time in the hall on Friday 4th December. They had lots of fun going down the bouncy slide and then listened to a presentation about brushing their teeth. They were very excited when Gladigator popped in for a visit towards the end of the presentation.

Homecoming Assembly

Primary 3 led the Homecoming Assembly on Friday 27th November. We told everyone what we had been learning about Scotland, sang some Scottish songs, recited a Scottish nursery rhyme and performed a Scottish dance!
Some children from Primary 5/6 and Primary 6 recited Scottish poems and Primary 4 impressed everyone with the Gaelic they had learned from Mrs Kelly.
Parents and friends were invited along and everyone had a good time and enjoyed some shortbread afterwards.

Vikingar Trip

To finish off our Vikings topic we went on a visit to the Vikingar Center in Largs. We were all very excited about travelling back in time to relive the life of a Viking. We first arrived in the viking long house where we were shown around by a viking lady. She was really nice and let us explore the inside of her home. Some of us tried to make bread and others put on viking armour which was very heavy.

Where the vikings came from

The Vikings came from Scandinavia this is made up from the countries Norway, Sweden and Denmark. But the land was made up of fjordes and it was very rocky this made it hard to grow crops.
The Vikings soon invaded Britain and grabbed riches, slaves and land. The warriors were fierce and frightening. The word Viking comes from the word ‘vikingr’ meaning pirate.

This term we are investigating the Vikings. We have been making Viking shields and learning where the Vikings came from.
